The UN chief said he believed that the US and Russia were "essential pillars" of the international community and should be included in a dialogue.

UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) – The world cannot afford to see countries like the United States and Russia at odds, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said in an interview with RIA Novosti.

"I think it is clear that relations are difficult … (and) face many problems. But I firmly believe that peace and security in the world still depend very much on the possibility of these two countries "The absolutely essential pillars of our countries are the international community – these two countries – to engage in meaningful dialogue and consensus in a number of areas that are of primary concern to both of us," Guterres said.

"The world cannot afford to see countries as big, powerful and important as the United States and the Russian Federation conflict," he said.

Relations between Moscow and Washington have deteriorated further since President Donald Trump, who originally wanted to "get along with Russia", took office. The United States imposed new sanctions on Russia, targeting, among other things, its energy projects. In addition, Russian diplomatic property has been confiscated by the United States since late December. Recently, US law enforcement officers searched the buildings, resulting in a strong conviction of Moscow.

Despite tensions with the United States on several issues, Russian officials have repeatedly expressed their willingness to engage in an equal and mutually beneficial dialogue on global issues.

During the first meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Germany, an agreement was reached on the ceasefire in southern Syria, which has contributed to the peaceful settlement of the conflict.
